Procedure Preparation
Everything You Need to Know Before Your Procedure
Careful preparation helps ensure your procedure is safe, comfortable, and provides the most accurate results. Please review the instructions below and follow the specific preparation guide provided by our team or your specialist.
General Preparation Guidelines
- Carefully read your preparation instructions as soon as you receive them
- Inform us of all medications, including blood thinners, diabetes medications, or supplements
- Advise us if you are pregnant or have significant medical conditions
- Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home after procedures performed under sedation
- Follow fasting and dietary instructions exactly as directed
Colonoscopy Preparation
Why bowel preparation is important
A clean bowel allows your specialist to clearly visualise the colon lining and detect polyps, inflammation, or early cancers. Inadequate preparation may result in reduced visibility or the need to repeat the procedure.
Preparation typically includes:
- Low-residue diet in the days before the procedure
- Transition to clear fluids prior to the procedure
- Prescribed bowel preparation medication
- Drinking plenty of clear fluids to stay hydrated
Gastroscopy Preparation
- Fast from food for several hours prior to your procedure
- Avoid certain medications as advised by your doctor
- Continue essential medications with small sips of water if approved
Capsule Endoscopy Preparation
- Starting a clear fluid diet the day before
- Taking bowel preparation medication if prescribed
- Avoiding food or drink for a specified fasting period
- Wearing comfortable clothing on the day of the procedure
Medication Considerations
Please inform our team if you take:
- Blood thinners (e.g. warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban)
- Aspirin or antiplatelet medications
- Diabetes medications or insulin
- Iron supplements
Day of Procedure
- Arrive at the scheduled time
- Bring identification and insurance details
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Arrange transport home if sedation is planned
You may be advised not to drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after sedation.
After Your Procedure
- You will be monitored until fully recovered
- Written instructions for recovery and follow-up will be provided
- Your GP will receive a report outlining findings
